It is unfortunate that the "pop rap" of Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer fell upon the fickle ears of America. Add to it the sounds of J.T. (and no, we're not talking Timberlake) and you have a short-lived era of fun, samples, interesting raps, and appeal to a wide audience. It is sad that times change because "Kick the Funk" unites listeners, is not degrading or angry, and reminds me of my youth. As a rapper, JT swings with the best of them: heavy beats, every word can be understood, and he has a great sense of assurance, musicality, and - yes - sexuality. Aren't these the qualities we hold dear of our rappers today? PLEASE check out the video for "Swing It" (youtube) and you'll see what I mean. WHY was this guy not bigger? He should have had longevity. And, sadly, it is true... the same can be said of Ice and Hammer too.
