I AVOIDED THIS EP for too long. Repulsed by an article I read describing it as a "waltz" record which drew upon an image of old folks dancing slowly under a mirrored disco ball under the influence of eggnog and peptides; not realizing REX set out to make a waltz record in the literal sense (music in triple time with a strong accent on the first beat). This is some of the finest music being made today. Not quite rock, or traditional folk, definitely not pop, more on the order of memorable slowcore tune smithery. This band has huge things to say and the four songs on this EP engage elements of strings (Kristen McCord); the stoic drumming of Doug Scharin and the wonderful singing voice of Curtis Harvey and his lonely guitar. "High School Dance Hit" employs a single drifting trumpet note glued together by sinewy viola and Harvey's rhythm guitar. "Willow Garden" is a traditional song (also covered by Appalachian Death Ride - ADR self titled debut) immediately likeable bringing the country to Brooklyn to be sure (love that banjo playing by Phil Spirito). The dance closes with the very beautiful "Blue Eyes You're Not" adding the wallop to the mix and punctuating the need for more REX which you will find yourself as I - hitting replay over and over again

there's also a vinyl-version available but I'm not sure how to add this to the database.
