Have a listen to this...4 years before Xpander..It's like finding out your wife has been having an affair for the last 20 years!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=50&v=R--pM46RX2E

Kind of, but not really. A lot of music was made with the same equipment back then, options were limited. There are plenty of tracks that come out today with the exact same riser/build-up because of plug-in saturation. Even with the similarities, Xpander remains one of the best Trance songs ever produced.

Sasha's Xpander EP was and still is the epitome of the progressive house genre in 1999. Every track is intellectually layered, with multiplicity of dynamic sounds only to be understood + appreciated after repeated listening sessions.Sasha was undoubtedly at the top of the electronic music.A classic for prog-house lovers, and a must for any electronic music collection.

If you have this on vinyl then play "Baja" at 45rpm and if you have on CD or MP3 play on your cdjs faster.I think ti sounds far better at twice the speed, imo.

I agree xpander does not sound like little bullet live mix.On Charlie May's album "mayhem volume 1" the sleeve notes say "Sasha tasked May with engineering a new version of an unreleased Spooky track xpander", so if that's correct then it seems like it was more Charlie May's work, but obviously he was happy for it to be credited to Sasha.

Deffo Charlie played all the synths on Xpander.. Used to frequent Drum Club @ Soundshaft.. Heaven.. Charing Cross in early 92
Hellblade
I agree, I don't think they sound the same at all.

Heard Xpander for the first time when Taucher mixed it into Bedrock's Heaven Scent on Tillmann Uhrmacher's MaxiMal show. Both tracks were a revelation; but as UK progressive house wasn't marketed in Germany, the EP was hard to get. Got my hands on the CD version 3 years later on a vinyl/CD bazar - I couldn't believe that I could have THAT much luck! And then, some months later, I left a box with ten of my favourite, partially rare, discs in the bus after school. I never saw the box again. Imagine my relief when I discovered that this disc was in my discman at the time and that i forgot the sleeve at home that day!Since then, it is that very special item in my collection. Each track is great - an essential ep as asot7 said!

Xpander changed my life forever. Once you click with this type of music it is like losing virginity, there is no way back, ever!

Anyone know what city features on the front & back cover?

Wow, thanks for answering this. I have always thought it was like Buenos Aires or Mexico City
Shaktit
downtown los angeles, facing south.

The credits on this record have always cracked me up. It says "written by A. Coe", but then Xpander and Belfunk were written by Spooky. Which is it? Can't be both! As a long time Spooky fan, there is no doubt in my mind Xpander is a Spooky track, pure and simple.

To my ears it sounds like Sasha was more influenced by the Bedrock mixes of this https://www.discogs.com/Evolution-Feat-Jayn-Hanna-Walking-On-Fire/master/130000 Listen to the riff/melody line in both the Bedrock and Dub mixes. End of the day Sasha's name is going to sell more copies than Charlie May's so I doubt he was miffed or complaining :-)

I like the 4 tracks in this EP, but Xpander is the master piece of this LP, when you listen this tune, you can feel all the melodies ans beats, the main sound is just amazing!! for me is a masterclass record, obiously I remember his roots - Spooky "little bullet" "live" mix.

For me Belfunk Is the best track of this EP....with a wonderful break.

Xpander for me, is simply timeless. It carries you away into an endless swirling sonic sounds-cape, that has you somersaulting & sliding through deep primal emotions that envelope your heart and soul on a level few tracks ever have or could even hope to emulate on such perfect pinnacles of pure production...My hat is without a doubt truly off for a job by far suppressing well done, by Mr Coe & May.Thank you both for an endless sonic cinematic masterpiece, that i and all other's will forever hold dear to their hearts............

Not much needs to be said about one of the best progressive trance EPs of all time. People focus on Xpander, but all four tracks on this release are great in their own right.
Wizard
ESSENTIAL EP.

Dont get me wrong this is an awesome 4 tracker and I love all the songs but what is all this rubbish about Sasha creating this unbelievable track "expander" ? Expander is a great track but if your into your Prog house, you may remember it in the back of your head. Pull out the "live" mix of Spooky "little bullet" and you will notice it was produced my Charlie May (the man who Sasha worked with on "Expander") You'll soon realise that expander is just remix. If you don't believe me do a search on Youtube.

I own both double packs and I just don't see the connection with Xpander sounding like Little Bullet "Live". Sorry I just don't. They are two different tracks. They may have some structural similarities but they are completely different to me. I feel you on the fact that if you look at the credits that it seems like Sash did not even produce the track at all himself. Brings to mind when Oakenfold employed either Andy Gray or Steve Osbourne to do most of his work and then just turned around and put his name on it.

This EP is nice, but if you listen to Spooky's Little Bullet Part One right after you listen to this, the similarity will reveal itself. Sasha knows all the hot tunes but just like any other dj who releases material under his or her name, lacks originality in the production of music. They are like cover artists. Todd Terry is a prime example. Anyhow, the other songs are still okay. Personally I am disappointed in how sweet dreams, private eyes, tainted love, every breath you take, cybotron's clear, and kraftwerk's computer world all have become hit songs performed by someone else. A little sample here and there would be okay, but I don't think it cool to use it as your own.

Together with 'Heaven Scent' by Bedrock, 'Xpander' heralded the second coming of Progressive House. From here on for the next few years virtually every producer in the 4 to the floor sphere made their productions ever more progressive, and if they didn't, they usually got cast by the way side. Out of the four tracks here, the title track 'Xpander' is the best known and most accessible. It's an epic 11 and half minute journey to another world where everything seems just perfect. With its infectious sweet melody (that Charlie May just happened to have lying around) it is in equal measures trance as it is progressive house. Some well positioned breaks provide it a credible cross over appeal and make it great fun to beat mix. A landmark in the history of electronic music.

If I had to choose 1 release to listen to for the rest of my life, this would be it. Xpander is unbelievably warm, with 2 separate melodies combining at the climax of the track to send chills up your back like no other. Belfunk is an incredible progressive chugger. My favorite part in this is the mid section where the bassline drops and the high pitched bells chime in marking the end of every 8 beats. It ends ambient and mellow, almost making me feel like the ambient section should have been placed in the beginning of the track, as opposed to the end. Still an incredible track. Rabbitweed is not my style, but Baja is perfect for that afterhours vibe or a long car ride home after a show. Very slow and melodic, soothing to max.

Gotta say Baja is one of the best tracks i've ever heard. Just builds and builds and when he drops that little noise in at 6min? The track just picks you up on its own, no drugs needed!
Zugar
I'm reviewing this album solely due to my passion for the song "Baja." The longest song on the album, stretching a near 12 minutes is fluttering beauty. It is one of those songs in which your afraid to breathe because you fear missing a single beat. If I was to have one song constantly playing as the backdrop or soundtrack to my life, this could be it. So meditative, calming and peaceful. Although some might not have the patience to sit through to the climax, those who do are greatly rewarded. It's like tantric. Sit back, dim the lights, close your eyes and feel yourself drift into places unknown.

This entire EP is brilliant. Too often it seems that a CD single will contain only remixes or the odd B-side track, but Sasha puts nearly half an album on this EP, and it works. Xpander is epic. This huge club hit has a heavenly breakdown that I will never forget. Belfunk is raw Sasha in action, complete with a chilling, eerie melody transposed on a creative baseline. Rabbitweed always paints a picture of a different world in my mind. The screaming electronic string section, nearly four minutes in, always makes me feel like I’m out of my body. To cap it off, Baja is a percussion-based chilled sound with yet another catchy baseline. Evidently, I’m a big fan of this EP. Since my tastes usually stay within the boundaries of trance, I’d recommend this item to anyone with an interest in electronic music of any type. I feel that it is significant enough to break the barriers between genres, as it did for me, and have meaning as an achievement in electronic music production.
Simple fellow
This is definately among the greatest of Sasha's productions. With soft Progressive, ambient feel to each track, its simple yet complex and definately one of the most genius Electronic Dance Music productions to ever be realeased. This EP demands the utmost respect...
