Ohatollia
as my original copies of "Joker Smoker" and "One Spliff A Day" are well used, I bought these represses. I had the impression the bass was much les fuller, rounder, warmer and so did A/B comparison. There's quite a difference. I then recorded both (or rather all 4) 12" into my DAW with identical input levels. It very soon became obvious what the reason was: the re-issues are heavily compressed / limited and the waveform looks like a brick, whereas in the original certain sounds spike out and so have real impact. All the Greensleeves 12"s from the early 80s sound really good, full bass, powerful drums, crisp hi-hats & cymbals. Why anyone would want to squash the audio so as to compete with contemporary club music is beyond me. The re-issues sound weaker and flatter, so not even "loud" as such. They still sound ok, but way not as nice as the originals....EDIT 2018-05-25reading this again I must correct one important detail: most of the Greensleeves 12"s (when production and mixdown were of a certain standard) not only sounded extremely good in the early 80s but right up to the late 90s.They sound so crsip, full, warm, dynamic yet powerful on a decent home hifi and still absolutely overwhelming at high levels on a big PA or sound system. A&R and catalogue-wise they seemed to have lost their way for a while around that time, and so I lost interest and stopped buying.
