Just put my copy of this LP on and was really upset that it sounded horrible, full of noise immediately and present throughout. I cleaned the record very carefully hoping to improve, and it didn't make any difference. Ridiculous and pretty pissed off

I have good news for those that purchased this pressing. I bought a new copy and it has RTI etchings in the matrix and doesn't sound like garbage. I assume this is a new pressing that has finally been corrected. I will add this version later.

Any update on your progress? Still think it's an improvement?

I'm sad to report, my brand new copy mirror the problems mentioned below. It is obvious immediately that something is wrong with the pressing.

Same issue on my copy as well. "The Birth And Death Of The Day" is nearly unlistenable because of the crackle. All of side A sounds pretty bad. Side B has a few pops here and there. Side C sounds fine to me.

Exactly the same issues on my copy. The pressing quality of this record is worse than mediocre - it's abysmal. I've just run my copy through my record cleaning machine twice in the vain hope that might improve things. It hasn't. It really frustrates me when companies take advantage of the resurgence in vinyl by manufacturing absolute garbage like this. It's simply unacceptable. I wonder if the UK pressing is any better - I generally find them to be of superior quality. It's a shame the muppets who pressed this have ruined what is a fantastic record. I hope the guys from Explosions In The Sky read the comments from here and ensure the quality of their product is better managed, because the music here is genuinely first rate.

The record pressing of this album, as a warning to audiophile buyers, is mediocre AT BEST. All sides crackle quite loudly through almost the entire side, especially into the beginning moments and the runout. Side A also appears to have scuffing or smudging straight out of the package on both sides A & B. Side C has a ridiculously unacceptable amount of surface noise for an album in "mint" condition. The paper sleeves the records come in (which, to be positive, have absolutely gorgeous artwork on them) are also very flimsy feeling, about half as sturdy as the standard sleeves you can buy at say Fry's would feel. Mine arrived with a split already beginning to form on the left side on the sleeve for the first record, and the other sides on both sleeves all look like they're going to split at any moment. In terms of how the album sounds, the sound quality would be great if not for the aforementioned pressing issues. It doesn't seem like it was mastered off of say, a CD version, although with the smudging and surface noise it almost feels like it could be.This is a problem I've heard in many forums talking about EITS vinyls. They say all other of their albums are fine, it's just this one that for some reason has so many stupid errors in its production.

I agree with you. I wish I would have known the production quality prior to purchasing the album because I honestly wouldn't have wasted the money. I wouldn't say it's mediocre, I would say it's downright awful. Especially since this is one of my favorite albums and it has such a beautiful, unique sound that it's such a shame this has happened. I don't know why and I don't want to blame anyone, but I wouldn't recommend buying this.

It seems as though it kind of clears up after a first play. There was less crackling during the quiet parts when I played it; however, it was still there during the louder sections, ESPECIALLY right at the beginning of The Birth And Death Of The Day when the drums and tremolo guitars come in. The surface noise is also slightly lessened on the C side, and before the pianos really made the sound crackle, now they sound really natural and resonant. It's by no means perfect, but it's not as bad as some albums I've heard *cough cough Lateralus cough cough*.
