Without a doubt one of the most mature, effervescent, well accomplished and elegant techno albums of the past decade. Barely ever has techno music simultaneously sounded so detailed, rich in sound texture, yet so dance floor friendly and effective. From the off-beat trickery of the holds-no-barred opener, to the mysterious and psychedelic In The Dark (just check out those sound effects in the background during certain moments of the track), the broken beat wizardry and haunting beauty of The Search, the propulsive forceful intensity of Sub-Text, the pulsating minimal abstraction of Convert and Human Error, the depth, density and melancholic isolation of the aptly titled Solitude, the erratic, boundless and freestyle luxury of No Gravity, through to the closing melodic echo of the touching An Experimental Conclusion – The 65D Mavericks have crafted one of the most versatile and well rounded techno albums to have surfaced out of the UK in the last ten years. While definitely a double pack of outstanding material regardless of what your expectations are, "Defining the symptom" is so much than a collection of previously released quality tracks, let alone an album which found its success in a single formula and then equally deployed it over ten tracks. Each track offers a new sound and set of ideas, not afraid to flirt, assimilate and incorporate fresh and unconventional elements. No cookie cutter techno here, this should please anyone, from experienced connoisseurs to impassioned weekend party animals eager to wild out to some great tunes. This duo has crafted a modern classic of electronic music, which stops my breath upon each new listen now as much as it did back in 2002. In my opinion, along with The Murdoch Effect track from the INF-09 release, this is the duo’s greatest achievement.

This double 12" must be one of the most underestimated records in the (serious) techno genre. Quality off beat with enough changes to keep it interesting, and very dancefloor orientated. Obviously influenced by the downwards and surgeon camp, but easily meets up to LINO's high standards. If you want a perfect example what techno was all about post 2005, you are ought to check this one. And the 65 d's proved that they could bring some emotional clever sounds with "an experimental conclusion". Techno for the dungeons!
