Art Blakey is one of the most important figures in Jazz, second only to Miles Davis in bringing through prodigious new talent. Along with Horace Silver he was one of the foremost pioneers of the Hard Bop idiom. This ensemble, which is a forerunner of his Jazz Messengers who produced so many future stars, is particularly strong. It's one of the best examples of Clifford Brown's work, is an excellent document of a live performance from the time, and is a classic album that belongs in every serious Jazz collection. The CD contains two bonus tracks, and I'm particularly fond of "Blues" which perfectly captures Lou Donaldson's soulful blowing skills.
